Entry Level jobs and Internships Up from March

Rising unemployment and constant media attention to the economic recession, has even seasoned and experienced professionals worrying about their chances to find work. Considering this, it is no surprise that college graduates are concerned that finding internships and entry level jobs (more information) will be more difficult until the economy recovers. Despite this, a recent report shows that there are still positions for those who have just finished higher education.

CollegeRecruiter.com, an entry level jobs board, gathered information about which states are students best bet for finding employment. By searching the web to determine how many job listings there are in each area, the website discovered the top states and released the information to the press, in order to give students hope. The findings show that graduates may have more options than they think and that the possibilities have increased over the last two months.

"We were very pleased to see that almost every state, large and small, recorded significant increases in the number of internships and entry-level job openings," said CollegeRecruiter.com’s founder Steven Rothberg in a recent press release. “There has certainly been a lot of doom-and-gloom related to the economy over the past year but an increase in the number of advertised job openings means that more employers are finding it difficult to attract the talent they need to fill the openings they have. Historically, increased entry-level hiring is one of the earliest signs that an economy in recession is recovering."

States that listed the largest number of internships on Collegerecruiter.com during the month of April include: California, New York, Texas, Washington, D.C and Florida. The most entry-level jobs can be found in California, Texas, New York, Florida and Pennsylvania.

Aside from these top states there were several others that seemed like promising places to look for employment for graduates. Illinois was found to have a total of 764 internships listed on the website, which is a 9 percent increase from the previous month, and 3,895 entry level jobs. Massachusetts employers had listed 757 internships, a 13 percent increase from March’s 671 listings, and 3,247 entry level jobs, a 7 percent increase from the previous month. Virginia was found to have 714 distinct internship possibilities, an increase of 35 percent from last month, and 3,552 entry level jobs listed on the sites which is a 3 percent increase. Ohio also had it’s fair share, with 634 internships, up 31 percent from March, and 4,160 entry level job announcements, a 15 percent increase.

Collegerecruiter.com found that the metro area with the largest number of job listings for students was Washington, D.C. Between Maryland and Virginia, the D.C. area has a total of 10,421 positions, which is only a small increase form the 10,406 jobs listed on the site in March. Still, this is a significant number of positions.

The areas found to have the smallest number of possible jobs and internships for recent graduates came as no surprise and included: Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska and Vermont. Since all of these areas have very small populations, it was already very likely that they would have fewer positions. Graduates from these areas may find it necessary to relocate in order to find work.
